Xochimilco's history goes back to Pre
Hispanic times. The "Xochimilcas", the region's inhabitants, were known
for the creations of a complex system of agriculture and housing. They
used "Chinampas", pieces of compressed saturated mud with tree branches
that worked as excellent means for harvesting all kinds of vegetables and
plants over the water's surface, creating the famous Channels of Xochimilco
or "Floating Gardens". These Channels are one of the few lasting
sites that picture just how the City of Mexico-Tenochtitlan could have
looked like back in those days.
